Ngcobo, sangoma zouloue...

Ancestral spirits of the Zulu

Ancestral spirits of the Zulu

Zulu beliefs consist of a creator God called Nkulunkulu but over the centuries it has become obsolete and the Christian God took his place. But the strongest belief among Zulus is that of the ancestral spirits. These spirits are the ancestors of some families that have an influence on their everyday lives. The ancestors communicate with the human world through the Sangoma in a ritual. The Sangoma will consume a herbal mixture called muthi, which is prepared to influence ancestors. But there is another white muthi which is used for healing, to raise spells, prevention or termination of diseases, and a black muthi which can bring illness or death to others. Those who practise black muthi are called inyanga and are rejected by society.

The Zulus have a deep faith in nature. These two beliefs are mixed with Christian beliefs introduced by Europeans over a century ago.

They believe in witchcraft and a supreme being they call uNkulunkulu. Animal sacrifices are performed during religious ceremonies. These sacrifices are for ancestral spirits for protection and healing.

A legend describes Malandela as the father of Ntombella, Zulu's father, and thus the ancestor of the great Zulu kings. The tombs of these kings, from Malandela to Senzangakona, are located near Babanango in the valley of the White River Imfolozi.
